Canyon at Stanford

Today we went to Stanford to the track meet to see Nana and Papa. People often think that Canyon’s not a big talker. It could be because he doesn’t talk much unless he’s real comfortable with you, it could be that he has two other sisters who talk a lot for him and a baby sister that will someday, or he just doesn’t like to waste words, but once he starts talking…I’m telling you—you can’t get him to shut-up. So here’s a running paragraph that he just couldn’t stop saying over, and over and over again. You see, the way Canyon works, is if he had a great time…the next weeks to months of his life (often until the next moment of interest), is spend in wishing that tomorrow we could do exactly the same thing—without the bother of eating or sleeping of course. Besides deciding that track is not for him because, “mommy, I like to run real slow,” we went to The Cheesecake Factory for lunch and then happened to walk into a toy store that we were parked next to. Well, the rest is history. After picking out a shovel to dig buried treasure with, and spending the rest of the day digging a trap for the chickens in the sand box…he couldn’t stop reliving the day—by doing it again tomorrow:

“We can go in there tomorrow, after the running game, we’re going to go into the toy store and we’re going to get some toys, Mommy, you know what kind of toys we’re going to get…a pirate ship with an anchor.
I’m talking to you about the toy store with the pirate ship in it and a pirate box and with a new anchor.
Mommy, I brought my shovel downstairs and put it under my bed so in the morning, you know what we’re going to do? We’re going to go to the toy store by the running game and we’re going to pick the pirate ship, it’s still in a box and we can bring it home and we can open the box and you know what we need to open the box?
I want to talk to you about we can get something else there. We can get legos, too and mommy, we can buy them…you got to buy them with the guy—he buys a lot of toys at the toy store.”

I like that Canyon made a chicken trap in the sandbox. We might need him at Sky View. Friday, just as first hour started some kid told me he was late because there was a chicken in the student commons. Well, if it happened to be my creative writing class, I might have given that excuse a chance, but as I was finishing up with the role, I peeked out my door and sure enough, some rooster was perched on one of the benches. By this time some of the students were getting out of their desks and coming for the door, but I told them to sit down and that there wasn't really a chicken out the door (the lie was necessary for the common good). About two seconds later, a frantic secretary came on the intercom and called for a custodian to the student commons, so that effectively ruled out my careful lie. Anyways, apparently Sky View could use Canyon's chicken trapping expertise. We would be happy to pay one shovel per week.

Maybe if Canyon would have really caught a chicken in his trap...it would have said, "Little help here."

I believe Edgar that Logan High got your rooster... because we had a frozen rooster bowling contest. Or perhaps it was a chicken, it is hard to tell plucked and frozen.
